Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress DisorderPost-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder brought on by significant physical, sexual, or emotional trauma. Traumatic events that can cause PTSD include, but are not limited to: experiencing or witnessing sexual assault, physical or emotional abuse; kidnapping; war, terrorist attacks, torture, being held hostage or in a concentration camp; natural disasters; violent automobile accidents; drug addiction; and diagnosis of a life-threatening illness. In addition, children can also develop PTSD through bullying and mobbing.

Psychological effects often include hyper-vigilance, flashbacks, body pain, panic attacks, nightmares and other sleeping disorders, acute anxiety and anger. The symptoms are often so severe that they impede social interaction and hamper occupational functioning, leaving the victim feeling helpless and depressed. Mind-altering substances are frequently used to numb these feelings.
