Building trust with honesty in a broken relationship

Even after years of working on a relationship to build trust, people can become triggered slip and relapse.  By being honest with each other and accepting less than perfection, a couple can work toward a better, more fulfilling life together.  Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements says the way to build trust is to “be impeccable with your word.”  Many people who cause trust issues grew up in family systems where they learned to distort the truth in order to survive.  To rebuild trust we must become trustworthy people. Honesty is the bedrock of rebuilding trust.  People who embrace honesty as a way of life are able to express both positive and negative feelings without shame.  They are consistent with their value system, yet understand that others do not have to agree with everything they stand for.  They admit their flaws and mistakes and take others’ feelings into account before making important decisions.
